Connections between Asthma and ObesityAccording to the National Institutes of Health, the incidence of asthma among adults and children who are obese is higher than in the general population. In fact, it has been reported that obese children and adolescents are more than twice as likely to develop asthma as those who are not obese. Furthermore, adults with asthma are five times more likely to be hospitalized for their condition if they are obese.

In light of these statistics, people who are obese or overweight may find relief from their asthma symptoms and avoid complications if they lose weight.

Understanding the Relationship

Scientists have proposed several different theories in order to explain the relationship between obesity and asthma. These theories include:

  • Systemic inflammatory processes because of obesity
  • Altered lung function because of extra weight
  • Genetic factors causing both conditions

Obesity can also complicate asthma by forcing the lungs to work harder and by putting pressure on the airways.

What Can You Do?

If you are obese and already dealing with asthma, losing weight may help to alleviate some of your symptoms. Obesity can also make asthma more difficult to control, so losing weight may also improve the effectiveness of your treatments.

If you are obese or overweight and have not yet developed asthma, weight loss is still recommended. If you continue to live with the extra weight, you may eventually begin experiencing asthma symptoms. In addition, carrying extra weight can also lead to the development of other conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, gallbladder problems and a host of other issues that can decrease your quality of life.
