There is a rumor out there that a healthy diet comes with a high price tag. This just isn’t true. Eating Healthy on a Budget
Following a healthy diet is partially about the foods you eat and partially about the mentality you bring to the table. Your actual eating habits, including your snacking habits, how often you eat and the portion sizes you consume will all influence your diet—and ultimately your budget.
Consider how the following eating habits can influence your wallet as well as your waistline:
- Snacking when you aren’t hungry adds extra calories to your day, but this also means you are buying food you don’t need.
- Spending $10 or $15 a day on food might not seem like much at first, but this adds up over time. A latte in the morning, a burger at lunch and a snack in the afternoon can easily add up to $300 a month—and that is just in five days a week.
- Switching to water can save you a pretty penny, too. Soda, juice and other high-calorie drinks cost at least a dollar apiece, but don’t provide any nutritional value. Water is cheap (if not free) and your body actually needs it.
There are plenty of other ways that you can save money while improving your diet. Shopping from local resources like the farmers’ market is a great way to save money on produce. When you buy from a local farmer you can cut out the middle man, thus reducing the cost associated with shelving, preservation and transportation.
