Take a Walk to Lift your Mood

Take a Walk to Lift Your MoodExercise is an important part of any successful weight loss plan, but it can also have a strong influence on the way you feel every day. Becoming more active can give your mood and attitude a positive boost that will make it easier to stay motivated and follow your weight loss diet in New York.

How Does Activity Affect Attitude?

Even something as simple as a short walk on a treadmill provides enough stimulation to significantly improve your overall mood, which can help you stay motivated and on track to your weight loss goals. Physical activity can boost our mood and attitude because:

  • It releases endorphins. Activity stimulates the release of mood-boosting neurotransmitters called endorphins, resulting in a state of post-workout euphoria and positivity commonly called the “runner’s high.” This makes exercise capable of immediately improving our mood.
  • It can change our brain chemistry. Research shows that activity may alter brain chemistry much in the way that antidepressants do, and may even diminish the symptoms of depression for good. In one study, mice that were more active had more brain cells that produced GABA, a neurotransmitter associated with calmness. Another study found that jogging or walking a few times a week can be as effective at resolving depression as antidepressants, and some experts recommend that exercise should be prescribed for anxiety and depression just as antidepressants are.
  • It makes us more confident and distracts us from problems. As you become more active and reach your exercise goals, you’ll grow stronger and improve your body shape, and this can give your self-esteem and confidence a boost. Exercise is also an excellent diversion from our worries, helping us overcome stress and give ourselves a mental reprieve from troubles.

Because of benefits like these, exercise is especially useful for those who suffer from depression and anxiety. If you’re feeling down, a quick workout can be exactly what you need to lift your mood and restore your motivation. Relaxing activities like meditation and yoga are regarded as especially useful in alleviating the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The mood-boosting benefits of exercise are valuable to anyone trying to lose weight. It may be particularly helpful to exercise in the morning—starting off your day with exercise can improve your mood and help you stay happier throughout the day.
