One of the best ways to help your child cope with and avoid bullying is to open the lines of communication. You may be surprised to learn that your child is already the recipient of negative remarks at school, and that they are hurting. Encouraging your child to be open about her feelings and experiences can help her to cope with the stress that she is under, as well as provide you the parent with the opportunity to step in and help your child overcome any negativity that is surrounding her.

While you do not want to encourage your child to participate in violence, it is a good idea to teach him that he is allowed to speak up for and defend himself. Instill in your child the self-confidence to know that when a bully says something mean, it is saying more about the bully than it is about him.
