Lead by Example to Help Kids with Weight Loss
From the day they’re born, children learn countless things by imitating their parents. Newborns often mimic facial expressions like sticking out their tongues. Toddlers copy what they see and hear, from body movements to their first words. Imitation is how our children first learn how to do things independently, and it’s also a way for them to bond with us by doing the things we do.
Because children tend to look up to and imitate their parents, you have the perfect chance to be a healthy role model during your kid’s weight loss program. By setting a good example as your child loses weight, you can help him or her make healthier decisions, and as an added bonus, you’ll be making choices that help you maintain a healthy weight as well.
Ready to be the model of perfect health for your child? Set a great example by:
- Eating right (and talking about it). When you’re in the kitchen cooking a healthy meal, share the experience with your child. Tell your child what you’re cooking, how you’re cooking it, what you like about it and why it’s good for you. Let your child try it, and better yet, get him or her involved in and excited about cooking healthy food with an age-appropriate task.
- Getting active. Try to do something physically active every single day. This doesn’t have to mean going out for a strenuous, marathon-length run—find a few active hobbies that you enjoy, tell your child about what you’re doing and invite him or her to tag along. In addition to helping you both stay healthy, this can be a great experience to bond and have some fun together. Show your child that exercise is an important part of your daily life, and that it can be exciting and rewarding.
- Using free time wisely. Instead of spending spare moments in front of the TV or computer, show your child that there are other ways to use your extra time. Kids today are exposed to more technology than ever before, but you can show them that there are plenty of ways to have fun without a controller, keyboard or remote. Limit your screen time as much as possible and encourage your child to do the same by inviting them to get involved in the things you’re doing.
Because our children learn so much from us, your kid’s weight loss program is the perfect time to show them that living healthy is possible by doing it yourself.
