News from Dr Scinta
Wednesday, May 5th
Hi Everyone:
I appreciate your patience this month with my crazy travel schedule. Here is an update on what is going on in the bariatric world across the country. I have been learning amazing things about both adult and pediatric obesity treatments that I will share with you at our appointments. Here are some tidbits to wet you appetite (food pun- bad huh?):
American Society of Bariatric Physicians: Seattle, Washington (4/15- 4/18/10)
As you know, I sit on the board of the ASBP. We are working hard on many issues, including increasing the research performed in non-surgical weight loss. The more we have published on what has been working for you, the more the public will realize that there are other safer, equally effective (and often superior) options to surgery. This will also help you obtain better reimbursement from your insurance company. I met with BC&BS recently, and they requested data proving that what we do is effective. I have been loading their e-mails, but it never hurts to add a little more.
At this meeting, there was a wonderful series of lectures on sugar, especially sugar in processed foods. I thought this was summarized nicely in the following link: http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/b/2010/04/18/obesity-conference-report.htm.
Fascinating stuff.
Uniting Against Childhood Obesity: Shaping Our Future, 2010 Conference: Houston, Tx (4/27- 4/29/10)
I was fortunate to have been invited to speak on the role of the bariatrician in treating childhood obesity. Believe it or not, in Syracuse N.Y., we are leading the country in our treatment options and success rates. I am extremely concerned to see the pediatric bariatric surgery centers popping up around the country. Although this is a viable option for some adults, it has no business in the pediatric world, where time is on our side, and behavior is often dictated by the family! There are so many pieces to the puzzle with children, but the bottom line is: control a child’s hunger, work on the behaviors of the family, and get the kids away from the t.v. and video games. We also have to work from a grassroots level to get the crap out of the schools (vending, lunches etc.), bring back P.E. and health classes, and stop the endless marketing of junky food-like products directly to our children. We need to have “free range kids,” and it may take an entire community to get there, but it can be done! Check out this piece by Jamie Oliver, a famous chef who really gets it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIwrV5e6fMY&feature=player_embedded
Thanks,
Dr. Scinta
